Hey Justin, what's the story behind the Mystic Man?
I was inspired to start Mystic Man in 2014 after being frustrated in not finding organic products to use in my hair. During a trip through the Middle East and North Africa a few years previous I had collected a plethora of traditional hair cleansers and oils that were all made with organic and sustainable ingredients.
One ingredient that intrigued me was sedr, an age old solution for washing hair which is mentioned in Christian as well as Muslim traditions as having spiritual significance. As I starting using sedr products, it was the only thing I wanted to use, so I started Mystic Man to share that experience, by creating high quality, organic, ethically made products.
How did you meet the Dalai Lama?
Storytelling is a passion of mine and I’ve also been working as a filmmaker for 10 years. In 2016, I was asked to travel to across the globe to document an interview with the Dalai Lama in his compound in Northern India.
I was beyond excited, both as person inclined toward spirituality and sacred tradition and as a storyteller. While I was clipping a microphone to the Dalai he could sense how nervous I was and decided to tickle me under my arms taking me totally off-guard. He also gave a friendly tug on my beard as is his custom to bearded men.
I left the Dalai Lama’s presence with a more profound respect of his work as well as the importance of humor and humility as a language of the sincerity.
My experiences, travels, and encounter with the Dalai Lama has led me to creating the Mystic Man brand and my desire to give back to the world. I feel that we are all interconnected and play a major role in improving our condition on the earth.
Mystic Man dedicates a portion of its profits to the cause of improving education for disenfranchised youth and I will see to it that your support reaches these communities.
