Cinematic aerial shots of the Pacific Northwest interwoven with vignettes of everyday acts of injustice contrasting moments of healing makeup the stunning visuals of Brother Ali’s new music video for “Own Light.” The bearded albino MC is back with the first song from his upcoming album “All The Beauty In This Whole Life.” The video is introduced by Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah, a personal spiritual teacher of Brother Ali, saying:
“Beauty is the splendor of Truth. Use your hearts for what your hearts are for. Fill them with light do not fill them with darkness. The light of the human heart when it’s given faith, if it were opened up it would blind. May this message give us eyes with which to see, ears with which to hear and hearts which to love each other and to love the world and to do good.”
The song asks us to use our hearts for their created purpose and not to use our hearts for evil.
“Own Light” is a different take from Ali’s previous stylings from “Mourning in America Dreaming in Color” which he verbally assaulted the military industrial complex. The new song’s approach aims at the heart as the source of our Collective healing.
As an artist, Brother Ali has consistently challenged systematic injustice and the status quo of mainstream hip hop. In 2012 he was even arrested while demonstrating solidarity with a family being evicted from their foreclosed home. Ali often performs at fundraisers and free shows to bring awareness to social justice causes and uplift disadvantaged communities. Ali’s new album drops May 5th. It can be pre-ordered here.
